What we set

CookieCategoryWhat it doesHow long
nofuf_consentStrictly necessaryRemembers what you told us about cookies, so we stop asking. Holds your choices and the date you made them, nothing else.Six months, then we ask again.
nofuf_readerStrictly necessaryRemembers that you have subscribed, so stories open without asking again and the subscribe bar stops appearing. Holds the value 1, not your email address. One year, or until you clear it.
nofuf_sub_barStrictly necessarySet when you dismiss the subscribe bar, so it does not come back the moment you load the next page.Thirty days.
nofuf_previewStrictly necessaryCarries a reviewer pass on a pre-release copy of the site. Set only when somebody enters the review password; ordinary readers never receive it.Twenty-four hours, then it expires on its own.

Your choices

You are asked once, on your first visit. You can accept everything, reject everything that is not essential, or open the panel and decide category by category. You can change your mind at any time using the Manage cookies link in the footer of every page.

One category cannot be switched off, and it is worth saying plainly why rather than leaving a greyed-out toggle with no explanation. Strictly necessary cookies are the ones that make the site do the thing you asked it to: remember that you subscribed, remember that you dismissed something, remember this very choice. Turning them off would mean asking you the same questions on every page. Australian and European law both treat that category as exempt from consent for exactly that reason.

What we do not set

No analytics cookies. No advertising cookies. No social media cookies. No third-party cookies of any kind. The measurement and advertising switches in the panel are there because we would rather you had already told us no before the question ever arises, not because anything is running.

Advertisers on this site buy a position on a page. They are not given code, pixels or cookies, they are not told who you are, and they cannot follow you anywhere. The advertising video player runs with cookies disabled.

Clearing them

All of these can be removed through your browser’s site data settings. Clearing them means the cookie question and the subscribe bar both appear again. Nothing else changes and nothing is lost.

If this changes

If we ever add a cookie that does more than the ones above, this page will list it before it is set, the consent panel will carry it as its own switch, and everybody will be asked again rather than carried over on an old answer.
